The most famous greyhound track in Britain was closed in August 2008. Walthamstow opened its doors in 1933 and has played host to some of Britain’s best greyhound racing and what’s more, a few famous people too including Winston Churchill and Brad Pitt. In the height of this sport, Britain had no less than seventy-seven tracks, now with the closure of Walthamstow that number has dwindled to twenty-nine.
The first Greyhound Derby was ran at the White City Stadium, London in 1927, two years later, the Derby was won by the most famous greyhound in history, Mick the Miller. This amazing race was witnessed by a staggering 70,000 people. Unfortunately White City's fate was the same as Walthamstow although over two decades earlier when it was demolished in 1984.
Today tracks are based all over the UK including Cheltenham, Doncaster, Henlow, Nottingham, Peterborough, Sheffield and Swindon and greyhound racing seems to be as popular as ever so we might even see new stadiums popping up again.
